Avuru joined NNPC immediately he completed his degree in Geology in Nsukka in 1980, and was there for 12 years before joining Allied Energy, and later co-founding Seplat, arguably the most successful indigenous oil and gas company in Nigeria. Like many of his peers that graduated from UI, UNN, UNILAG, OAU, ABU with degrees in engineering and Geology around the time oil and gas industry in Nigeria was bourgeoning, he rose through the ranks to become an oil company founder today. By the way, he is one of teh few Nigerian executives with no foreign degree.
