What to Expect in NNPC Computer Based Aptitude Test
NNPC on 22 May 2019 sent an email to candidates that passed the first level screening of the ongoing 2019 recruitment exercise that a computer based test (CBT) will hold on Saturday, 1 June 2019.
Both entry level (graduate trainees) and experienced hires (officers, supervisors and managers) will write the test.
We present some information on what to expect in the test based on the experience of those who have undergone NNPC recruitment in the past.
The questions are generally of 2 categories:
1, General questions
2, Skill-based questions
- General Questions: This consists of questions that are not tailored to a specific field and it is to be taken by all candidates, irrespective of field. This consists of verbal aptitude and quantitative aptitude.
a. Verbal
- Verbal Comprehension: You may be given short few-line passages to read and a number of statements are made under each passage. You are to determine whether the statement is true, false or cannot say based on the passage. In answering this kind of questions, it is not what you think or what you know, but what is in the passage, even if it goes against what you know. Be careful of the trap of wanting to use your previous knowledge or even common sense in answering this kind of question.
- Analogy: This involves establishing between the connection between 2 given words and using the connection to choose the most appropriate word that pairs the word given in the question.
- Sentence Sequencing: This involves re-organizing sentences into a specific order.
- Sentence Completion: This requires you to fill in a gap or two gaps with appropriate word(s) from a given set of options
- Antonyms: Words and opposite. Go and dust your words and opposite texts.
b. Quantitative
- Word problems: If a car travels at xkm/h and cover y km, how long will it take to cover z km if it travels at three-quarter speed. Stuff like that. A lot of practice questions on this abounds, go and practice.
- Basic Arithmetic: Multiplication, addition, areas, perimeters, factorization and similar topics.
- Basic Mathematics: Series, graphs, etc
2. Skills Test Questions: This tests basic knowledge of the field you have applied to in NNPC. It consists of:
- Finance: Management accounting, cost accounting (direct cost, marginal cost, prime cost, budgeting etc) Social sciences questions: Economics (monetary policy, fiscal policy, international finance organizations liek IMF, World Bank; international trade, economies of scale etc) Humanities: Theories of motivation, expectancy theory, job staisfaction, performance appraisal etc Marketing: marketing mix, marketing concepts, chain of distribution etc. General Questions: It is your residual knowledge that will help you as the field is too broad. So expect questions like current affairs, basic history – number of LGs in Nigeria, Nigerian authors, full meaning of some popular abbreviations and many more.
- Basic engineering questions: General questions: substances, energy transformation, heat transfer modes etc; Physics: mass, velocity, period of revolution, reactions etc General Engineering: force, energy, principle of equality, isothermal expansion, ohm’s law etc
- Information technology questions: machine language, information transmission, software packages, acronyms and their full meaning etc
- Medical sciences questions: General science (photosynthesis, elements, etc); General medical sciences: organisms, digestive system, respiratory systems, cellular processes, etc
For the skills test, candidates will be required to answer only the questions that relate to their field.
This research is based on experience of past candidates of NNPC, it is by no means exhaustive. Practice a lot of questions and revise basic knowledge in your field.
All the best.
