What can I do while ASUU are on strike?
Good Morning Sir,
My name is Akanni Q. I have been looking for a blog like yours for a long time. I must commend you and your team for doing a great job. OAU school calendar is giving me problem, I want to add to myself before finishing school, but each time I try, it’s not working out. Most internship openings ask for 3-5 months and we don’t have a stable calendar. We have been at home now for 2 months and seriously tired of not doing more than reading. I wish to take ACCA after school so I can’t do ICAN. Please sir what can I do to add to myself before finishing school?

Dear Akanni,
Unpalatable as ASUU strike is, you can actually eke out a positive from it. The founders of Jobberman, which is West Africa’s biggest job search platform today, used the opportunity of ASUU strike of 2009 to do something: they started something on the internet; four years down the line, they have been listed by no less a rating body than FORBES as one of Africa’s biggest start-ups. Incidentally, they were also OAU students then.
I also experienced one of the longest industrial actions in the history of Nigeria: the OAU internal crisis that rolled into ASUU national strike that condemned us to our homes for 11 months (July 2002 – May 2003). I used the period to study – all kinds of materials, from my school notes (for the next session) to religious and political texts, I was busy reading. I also used the period to work on my writing. In fact, my first article that was published in a national newspaper (Punch, May 9, 2003) was written during that break.
Internship is not the only way of adding to yourself before finishing your undergraduacy. So if you can’t get anywhere to intern, don’t get tired of reading; get notes and materials for next session/semester (if you still have one), finish them over and over again, try to learn new things. If you are in final year, this is an opportunity to read about post-school life, and devise your strategy. Start familiarizing yourself with GMAT and interview tips etc.
All the best.
Jarus

I beg to disagree with you. He has not finished school, so whether on campus or off-campus, his academics should still top priority. I gave my personal example, of what I used my ASUU-induced break to do; I also mentioned how ASUU strike turned out to be a blessing for Jobberman founders in the same OAU. You could have also added your own, that he should go and learn tailoring or vulcanizing, rather than say the ‘read books’ advice is academic. For me, he is still a student, whether ASUU is on strike or not, academics should still be the priority. He can also consider pursuing some other passion, which is why I mentioned the Jobberman example.
For me,I’m going through my current semester academic materials repeatedly and doing jarushub with my jotting book especially for my life after school. Enough thanks,mr Jarus!
