Want to dump my banking career for Public Relations, my interest?
Hello Jarus, I need a career change. I am a graduate of English Language who delved into Banking after NYSC. I have always had interest in Public Relations and would like to explore that option. Kindly advise on way forward.
Thank you
Mercy

Simple: start applying to PR outfits. You may also try Masters in a relevant course in a Nigerian university (or in a foreign university if you have the financial strenght). Is it also possible that you request a posting to Media Relations/Corporate Communications department in your bank?
I would have said you should look at setting up your PR firm right away, but one, you don’t have requisite experience; two, PR career is one endeavour that you need good network to be able to do. It will be difficult to just walk up to and convince a potential client that you can promote him or his brand (for a fee) if you yourself don’t have the brand on ground, or at least experience.
But I still think PR is still a fertile ground. My good egbon, Yushau Shuaib, and Chude Judeonwo of REDMEDIA are making living out of that field.
You may also want to test waters by setting up a blog/portal and see if you can build a name for yourself on that niche.
All the best.
