QUESTIONS:
1. Tell me about a time when you sold a product?
Tip: Here, the interviewers want to test your sales ability and see how you can ensure the products can be purchased by consumers. This is when you narrate your experiences during any sales related job you had. That is, when you had to pitch to either investors, clients, customers, suppliers and anyone that is desirous of purchasing your product. Then again, if you have no experience specifically on products, you could talk about a service that you pitched to clients for consumption.
Whether from a non-business environment or with a science background, this is when your business side should be expressed. Inasmuch as businesses can be technical, the technology has to be commercialised. P&G is asking for a previous experience where you displayed this art. This is another way of asking: Tell me about a time when you had to be persuasive to make someone purchase an item?
2. Walk me through your final year project?
Tip: The assessors are desirous of you linking your project to the company, division, economy and society. You have to explain why and how the project is important; how it is useful to the firm and division and how conducting it has developed you as an individual. Expect follow-up questions which would be very technical.
3. Tell me about a time where you displayed innovation/creativity?
Tip: Your creative knowledge is being assessed. When was that time you developed an idea? How profitable was it to the organisation? The impact made? Lessons learnt? What initiative have you developed during past experiences? What is the thought process behind it? How were you able to make it work? These and many more encapsulate this question. How you answer them displays your innovative ability as P&G is one of the world’s most innovative firms.
4. Tell me about a time where you led a team?
Tip: This time, CAR, not STAR will be used. C = context, A = Action and R = Result. You led a team, right? What was the team about? How many persons were in the team? What was your role? Your role in the team as a leader or even the led is extremely important as the interview is about you and not anyone. You should describe the context in the situation, action taken and eventual result. If possible, make your result analytical.
5. Tell me about a time where you faced an ethical dilemma?
Tip: This assesses your integrity. Here, you have to talk about ethically dilemma situations that resonate with the firm and industry. Stealing is an unethical issue, but construct the process based on the consumer industry. Yet again, the CAR technique should be used here. What was the context, action taken and result? Your answers should be constructed using the technique to make a logical deduction. Do not lie.
6. Why Procter and Gamble Nigeria? Why not Unilever?
Tip: This is the opportunity to praise the firm. Look for what makes the different from others aka her uniqueness. Play on that to the interviewers. Procter and Gamble is the biggest FMCG firm globally – play on this. The training they offer, growth opportunities, experienced gained, brand, global reach etc. While you play on their strengths, do not belittle or mock their competitors, no matter what. For instance “Unilever is a great place to start a career as a sales manager, but I believe P&G is the biggest consumer goods firm globally and offers one of the best training available in the industry. So good is the training that it is used as the industry’s benchmark. Africa is growing fast in population, discretionary income and subsequent consumption. P&G is the best place for me to play my part in this growth phenomenon.”
