FEATURED COMPANY
NIGERIAN STOCK EXCHANGE
QUESTIONS:
1. Why the stock exchange? (Especially if your course is not finance related)
Tip: Here, the recruiters are desirous of knowing your passion for the firm and industry. You have to demonstrate passion and desire for the financial industry. The interviewers want to see your desire for the industry and not just something to pass time with. Think about a time/project/person that made you decide that it is the financial industry you desire to have your career. Expect follow-up questions.
2. Walk me through your knowledge about the Nigerian Stock Exchange?
Tip: Another way of asking: What do you know about us? Here, you have to briefly reel out the history behind the NSE. For instance: “Currently, the third most capitalised stock market in sub-Saharan Africa serving Africa’s second financial city. Formerly known as The Lagos Stock Exchange and renamed The Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1977, she was founded in seventeen years before the name change. Although, informal operations took place on the floor of the NSE as at June 1961, formal operations commenced in August of the same year with 19 securities listed.” Furthermore, you talk about the values, mission and vision statements; the heads of the exchange throughout the period (just pick important timelines of the economy and the heads of the NSE during the period). Basically, just summarise the history and important moments of the firm.
3. Tell me about a time you faced an ethical dilemma?
Tip: Integrity, honesty, ethics etc. Name it; you will be tested on any. The recruiters want to hear your experience of how you had handled such a situation. You will be exposed to various figures of companies that will have to do with a high volumes of financial data and resources. How you effectively managed a previous case is vital to assessing your integrity. Expect follow-up questions afterwards. Just don’t lie.
4. Discuss about a recent economic development/policy that piques your mind.
Tip: Discuss any recent economic policy/news/development in the country. Your knowledge of socio-economic and to an extent socio-political issues is assessed. This is another way of asking: How do you stay abreast of the developments in the economy? Preferably, use figures to explain the news behind the news. For instance: “The biggest dairy producer in the country, Frielsand Campina, has signed an MOU with five states (list them) on developing dairy ranches in them. This is commendable as it will go a long way in tackling the herdsmen and farmers’ crises, reduce our importation of dairy products worth $???BN as at (mention the year), while also reducing the pressure on the naira”
5. Technical Questions: What do you know about the money and capital market? What are indices? What do you understand by a securities’ market? On what basis should securities be selected? What is the current stock index?
Tip: Your knowledge of the stock market and her terms are tested here. Whether you are from a finance or non-finance background, expect technical questions. How you are able to answer these and many questions plays a very important role in your chances of being recruited. As much as you cannot know the nitty-gritties of the market, the recruiters expect a basic knowledge as this further displays your passion for the firm. Calmly answer the questions as they come. Key phrase: Exude composure.
