QUESTIONS:
1. Can we meet you?
Tip: Here, the interviewers just need a an introduction not a history of your entire life. A formula I really like to use is called the Present-Past-Future formula. You talk about your past (at least our tertiary education), move to your present level (whether professional or education) and briefly talk about your future plans (with the firm of course). Remember throughout your answer to focus on the experiences and skills that are going to be most relevant for the recruiters when they’re thinking about this particular position and this company. Most importantly, do not be afraid to relax a little bit, tell stories and anecdotes—the interviewers already has your resume, so they also want to know a little more about you.
2. Walk me through your final year project?
Tip: The assessors are desirous of you linking your project to the company, division, economy and society. You have to explain why and how the project is important; how it is useful to the firm and division and how conducting it has developed you as an individual. Expect follow-up questions which would be very technical.
3. Why Ashaka Cement (Lafarge Africa)?
Tip: You are to explain why the firm is desirous. For instance, “Ashaka Cement (a subsidiary of the Lafarge Africa) has an enviable brand across in Nigeria; offers world class training, perks and is a good place to build a career. The group is actively involved in the economy of not just Nigeria but Africa, and I want to be part of this reality. Here is a subsidiary of a global conglomerate pushing the boundaries across Africa and the world, delivering quality products and services.” Chipping in key timelines and investments of the firm across the various locations is a booster. Keep it cool but be accurate.
4. Technical Question: For instance, explain the working process of cement manufacturing?
Tip: You are expected to exude technical proficiency in answering this question and subsequent ones. The interviewers are desirous of your knowledge (might be basic or advanced, depending on the role). To avoid a lengthy interview, simply summarise the processes involved but without omitting key points. Expect follow-up questions from your responses.
5. Describe a long-term project that you managed. How did you keep everything moving along in a timely manner?
Tip: This assesses your time management skill. Describe to them that time when you handled a project which took your time and how you managed it. Here, you use the STAR procedure to explain the event; the situation, task, action taken and eventual result. Also, talk about what you learnt from the project and how it has contributed to your career development. Expect follow-up questions
6. Tell me about a time you were involved in an accident as individual?
Tip: They are testing your safety thought process and how you react to accidents. Cement production involves lots of hazards and if not properly managed can constitute a serious problem (health and physical) to employees. Describe the accident, the process of recovery and how you managed it. If it is within the workplace, talk about how the firm managed the process and policies that were enacted to forestall future occurrences.
What if you have not experienced any? Simply say so. But all-in-all, expect safety related questions in the workplace.
