Tired of traditional banking; need to re-ignite my entrepreneurial spirit
Hi Jarus,
It’s not impossible that I am over reacting or just not taking things easy with myself; however, I am in a dilemma!
I can’t just seem to make a decision and follow it through.
Let me give you a brief background. I used to be a passionate person about my dreams, vision and hope for the future, I wrote down what I wanted, go for training on any if required, got the company registered etc. All of a sudden all the dreams fizzled away and can’t seem to go after them again.
I am currently in a leading financial institution in the country; however, I want to get my entrepreneurship spirit alive and running(even if not on a full scale).
My passions/desire you want to ask? Hmmmm….events planning, selling fabrics, raw food, drinks. I also do a bit of interior decoration jobs, I want to do cocktail/bar tending classes and so on but don’t know how to get myself do all and get it running.
On the job part, its worse…. I am tired of been a traditional banker. I have worked in relationship managementt, operations, change management, process implementation and customer service team and it seems scattered because when I’m asked what I am,I don’t know!!!!
Just help rearrange this chaotic me once and for all.
I look forward to your honest response.
A.
Dear A,
Your passion – events planning, selling stuffs etc – are interestingly very lucrative. Don’t leave your banking job yet, pick any of those business interests to focus on and start small. It may not be easy combining with banking.
You have registered a company already, good; open a website and package your offerings; publicize your products/service/company through facebook, BBM, circle of friends, etc. You may not need a physical shop yet. Before you know it, the passion will be re-ignited. I know people that combine bag selling with their job as Accountant.
David Wej, one of the biggest indigenous brands in clothing in Nigeria today, with outlets in VI, Lekki and Surulere, resigned from his job in Globacom to float a wear shop. Now, 5 years on, he is made. A lot of people have also left their formal jobs – especially banking – to follow their passion and are doing well.
On not being able to describe what exactly you are as a banking staff, well, that’s the truth with most bank workers. This is one of the reasons I’m not a big fan of traditional banking job, especially when one is not a professional like accountant, financial analyst etc.
I won’t advise you resign yet, but you may test waters through the strategy I highlighted above.
