THE MESS SOME PART-TIME PROGRAMMES PUT STUDENTS INTO

1

Good day JarusHub,

I stumbled on your blog today and I’m really impressed with your hardwork in helping people with advice in their respective career. God bless you.

Please I need your advise on this rather disturbing issue. I’ll be so glad if you can assist.
I went to LASU part time, the Isolo external campus, as I gained admission in 2004 to study accounting. Regrettably, my preference for part time was for economic reasons as my family wasn’t so financially capable and I had to work to supplement the school fees. The programme of 5 years took much longer time. I presumably concluded in 2011 but till date there’s been one story or another as to why the school’s Senate hasn’t approved some results including mine.

Now I have run out of patience because I’ve lost time and not getting younger and can’t get a befitting job to cater for the growing responsibilities. Fortunately I started writing ATS and I recently wrote the professional level of ICAN. I’m currently working with my ATS certificate as an account officer.

Please I want to know:

1. What are the prospects of getting a good job with just an ICAN qualification without a BSc?

2. I was thinking of using the ATS to get an HND and the closest school around is Ronik Polytechnic (2 years part time programme). How wise is this or is NOUN BSc of 4 years preferable? How employable is a Ronik Polytechnic Certificate?

3. What advice can you give to me considering all the above information and turning 30 next month?

I know this is a lot of request and I truly appreciate your time and response to these disturbing matters. Thank you so much for your time.

Yours sincerely,
Jide

ROAD TO VI PRINT1

Dear Jide,

I generally don’t encourage part time programmes the way they are done in Nigeria. I have seen them put too many people in this kind of confusion.

I’m not a fan of private polytechnics, I must confess. Other than the big names like Yabatech, Kaduna Poly, Auchi Poly, Ibadan Poly, LASPOTECH, and about 10 others, I’m hardly excited about others, especially private ones. I’m sure you got my point. I don’t want to demarket any school here.

NOUN? That’s another school that I keep receiving emails on. Too many people are also confused about their status as a NOUN student.

But between Ronik and NOUN, I will go for NOUN.

The good thing is you’re now working, even if it’s just an accounting officer position. You’ve also gotten to professional stage in ICAN. Try to complete your ICAN, continue with the job, when you finish your ICAN programme, it may be an avenue to get better positions (e.g accountant) in that company or elsewhere.

My advice in summary:

1, If you must choose either of NOUN or Ronik, I will say NOUN

2, Continue with your ICAN and finish it in good time

3, Continue with your current job, do it well, and when you have your ICAN, try to see if they can give you promotion, with or without degree certificate yet.

4, When you get your ICAN, seek opportunities outside too. Put on your CV that you’re a graduate of LASU, even you’ve not gotten your certificate. You can always explain that at the interview. You may show printout of your final year result as evidence (I saw someone in similar situation that used that to get job).

5, Target small and medium companies more. Some of them are not so strict with certificates or don’t care much about part time- full time distinction if someone has experience and  professional qualification.

I wish you all the best.
