Q&A ON CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN PUBLIC RELATIONS

2

Dear Jarus,

Please I need your guidance on how to go about my career. I studied mass communications, and graduated with a 2.2. ( second class lower). I’m currently serving in Kogi state, but Immediately after this service I plan to Join ( NIPR) Nigerian Institute of Public Relations directly as a member without writing their exams since I
studied Mass Communications.

One of the reasons why I intend to join these professional body, NIPR is because mascommunications is too broad, and so I decided to carve a niche for my self.

Another reason is because I developed interest in problem solving, and so I aspire to work with organizations. Not in the newsroom.

Thirdly, my decision  to join this professional body (NIPR) was to augment my weak 2.2 result.

But the questions I kept asking myself are;
1. Will the joining of NIPR boost my qualification?

2. After spending huge amount to purchase the membership form, is it
going to be recognized.?

3. Without joining NIPR as a member or have written their exams, is there an assurance that I can land in my dream job? And if all not possible, can I switch gear and change focus onto another line?

4. And to what extent is the demand for public relations expert in Nigeria’s labour market.?

The major reason why I’m taking the desperate measure is because I do no wish to go back home and sit idle with my parent after my service year. since they are so poor.

Sir , I will really appreciate your  help in my life by putting through on what to do.

Dear Tosin,
1, Joining NIPR will no doubt improve your job chances. But it’s no silver bullet.
2, I think its is recognized. It will also be helpful in other ways. Being a member means you’re eligible to attend some of their events, which will be an avenue for you to build a network of PR professionals who may end up being helpful to you. Having that you’re a member of NIPR will also boost your CV for PR roles or proposal for PR jobs.
3, No one or nothing can assure anyone of job. With or without NIPR, you can get job. Joining it is only an effort that I think is worthwhile.
4, I think there is rising demand for PR experts in this age. More and more entities are taking their image very seriously. I will advise you start reading books and other online articles on public relations, branding etc.  You also need to read about successful PR or branding professionals and see what they did differently.
I recommend this website: INFLUENCE & CO, among other materials.
On a final note, I will advise that you don’t restrict yourself to PR job alone. Be open to other opportunities.
I wish you all the best.
