Q&A: Career Dilemma of a Bored Banker

1

Hi Jarus

I need your input and direction here. I have almost six years experience as a relationship manager in the banking industry. I also just recently completed my doctoral studies in economics. My job to me as a banker has become monotonous, it’s just marketing, deposit mobilization. I’m not learning anything new new anymore, no new skill, nothing. Though lecturing and development consultancy come to mind, I want to know if it will be proper for me to write to the HR of my banking, presenting my doctoral degree and requesting for career progression in a skilled department where one can learn new things which will be useful outside the banking industry. A department like risk management comes to mind. Your thoughts please.

Dear Maria,

I fully agree with you that, with doctoral in economics, being a relationship manager with roles being limited to marketing and deposit mobilizing is not the best value for the investment in your education and career. It is capacity underutilization.

It is absolutely in order to write to the HR of your bank making a polite case for your deployment to a more relevant department. You need to have the department of relevance in mind. Head Office treasury, risk management, investment banking, research and similar intellectually stimulating departments come to mind. Of course you will not write in the case that your current department is not intellectually stimulating. Present your doctoral certificate, talk about the fact that it would be more relevant – with better application of your knowledge and skills – in the targeted units. A reasonable HR should understand your case and promise the redeployment even if there is no opening in the short term (0-6 months).

If you know any top guy in the targeted departments too, you could also informally walk up to him to discuss with him. It would be easier if the targeted department is also interested in you. They could push from their end too.

I wish you all the best.

Jarus
