Q & A with an Accounting Student with Eye for Investment Banking and Management Consulting

0

Hello sir,

My name is Sayo, currently an undergraduate in a top private institution here in Nigeria.  I am currently reading your book, “The Road to Victoria Island“, where I got your email address. I must say I have learned a whole lot from the book, even though the initial motive was just to get answers to interview questions.

The problem is, there are so many opportunities out there and it is unfortunate that I don’t exactly know where and how to start my career when I graduate. I’m currently writing my ICAN and will be done latest by November next year, I will also be graduating next year with a strong 2.1 or first class by God’s grace.

I’m also working on an internship with one of the big four firms this summer holiday in the management consulting department, so I can have a little experience of what to expect after graduating. I know for sure that I am not interested in working as an accountant because I do not enjoy accounting.

The problem is I don’t know what to do to kick start my career. What do you advise me to do? Oh and I am studying Economics which gives me a very wide range of career opportunities. But which is the best to start with as a graduate which will also guarantee me a very comfortable future in your opinion? Thank you for your much anticipated response.

PS: My two main areas of career interest are Management Consulting and Investment banking.

Dear Joshua,

Both MC and IB are two of the most lucrative careers in the world.

If you have these two in mind, I think it’s good enough. Either of them is OK to start career, but they are quite difficult to get into.
That you are studying Economics makes it even better. One with economics background already has relevant basic academic training for these jobs. Complete your ICAN, and that will improve your marketability.
If you could get internship slot in the advisory/consulting department of a Big 4, it’s even better for you.
So I think you are on the right track. Either MC or IB is ok.
Whether you get the internship slot or not, don’t worry yourself too much. Just try and read as much as possible to be ready when the opportunity comes. During your NYSC, apply to as many local firms as possible and by the time you finish your NYSC, with your Bsc Economics first class or strong 2.1, ICAN and solid knowledge of the two industries, you should not have much problem.
I wish you all the best.
