PHCN or private engineering firm as route to Oil & Gas Career?

4

Hello,
Please I am a graduate of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. I graduated with a 2.1. I finished my NYSC February this year. Presently I am working with a private Engineering solutions company but I got an offer for job with the PHCN Transmission Company of Nigeria but their pay is very poor for a start. Please which of these will give me the needed experience to move into the oil and gas sector and which professional certificate can I acquire to give me a better advantage?

I’m inclined to the private engineering solutions company, but PHCN TCN, if well run and structured and not like typical public corporation, is not a bad place either.  On a deeper thought, I think PHCN can also be the better platform for you to learn if you’re involved in the engineering and transmission processes, not just ‘carrying ladders around’. But in any case, most oil companies still regard you as entry level within first three years of graduation, and ignore where you work.

Why the obsession for the oil and gas sector, i doubt if that sector has more than 100,000 workers in its workforce and I do not foresee substantial growth in the sector. As an electrical/electronic engineer, I think you will be more relevant in the telecommunication or power sector.

With the privatisation of PHCN, I see that sector as the next big thing that will have big multiplier effects on our economy. Get the needed knowledge and experience in the company you are, the new investors in the power sector will definitely need more engineers like you. Electrical engineers should be the next hotcakes in Nigeria.

The power sector is a high growth sector, I think we currently generate about 5000MW in Nigeria which is less than the energy consumed in J’bourg. The Power sector has the potential to grow by as high as 1200%.

Sorry for mentioning names, if there is no money to be made in that sector Elumelu, Vigeo, IBB, Sahara guys, and some Investment banks would not have invested heavily in the the unbundled power distribution and generation companies.

Just confirmed that the Johannesburg consumes about 4000MW, while South Africa power plants had capacity for 37,000MW in 1989 which must have grown in 2013.
