Msc Oil & Gas or Msc Finance?

3

Please I need advice…I had Bsc Accounting, I’m done with service (NYSC) and currently writing ACCA.

I love oil and gas sector, and I am considering going for an Msc Oil and Gas management  in Coventry University which I’m not sure if it’s ideal for an accountant  to be. I don’t like bank jobs but I was also advised to go for Msc Finance instead; that it will help my career.

I am confused at this point …

Dear Worried Lady,

Msc Oil & Gas Management does not guarantee you job in the oil and gas industry. Not having one hardly dims your chance either. All you need to get job in the Oil & Gas industry as an Accounting graduate is your first degree and ACCA, although you still can get job without ACCA. But the terrain is highly competitive. These still do not guarantee, I must confess.

Between Msc Finance and Msc Oil & Gas Management, I will choose the former. Don’t restrict yourself at this stage, especially for something that doesn’t guarantee you job in the industry. Most people that do Msc Oil & Gas Management are people that are already working in the Oil & Gas industry.

My advice: take your ACCA seriously to complete it in good time; if at all you must travel abroad for your Msc now, go for Finance. Otherwise, start looking for job, in the oil and gas industry or elsewhere, especially the Big 4 professional services firms (PwC, KPMG, Deloitte, Ernst & Young).

You are right Jarus. Msc Oil & Gas Management does not guarantee one job in the oil and gas industry. In fact almost nothing does except you are already in the industry and you want to gain more knowledge about the field or what you are doing.
