MOVING FROM ENGINEERING TO ECONOMICS: ADVICE TO A STUDENT

0

Hi Jarus,

I am a part two Electrical & Electronic Engineering. I was in commercial class before I was advised to move to science and do an engineering course. I was given admission into Elect/Elect and since my part 1 till now, I have not been able to cope well (had a number of Fs in my courses) and I have obtained a change of course form to the course I initially wanted to do ( when I was in commercial class) which was either accounting or economics. I eventually chose economics due to the fact that I didn’t do accounting in my o’level , which means I don’t have the basic knowledge there.

I want to ask if there is any advice or help you can render?

Dear Bayo,

It is not too good that you waited this long before deciding to go for your dream course. There is no harm in changing to economics at this time. My fear, to be frank, is if you accumulated F in electrical & electronic engineering courses, it doesn’t look like prospects of garnering As and Bs in economics are bright. And you need many As and Bs to make a 2.1, even in economics.

But this is an opportunity to prove this convention wrong.

I support your crossing to economics but you need to work very hard. No course is a walk in the park, not least economics where all those mathematical courses you may have failed in elect/elect department are still waiting for you, even if not as advanced as those you faced in your former department.

Yet, I believe you can do it. Just refocus. Doing well as an economics student requires a balance between theory and calculation.

For relevant tips in succeeding in your newfound path, I will just recommend these articles we have published in the past on academic success:

I am sure the nuggets shared in these articles will be helpful to you.

I wish you all the best.
