MAKING THE BEST OF NYSC SERVICE YEAR

0
I am an ardent reader of your blog and it has been helpful. I am a recent graduate of Civil Engineering in one of the country’s federal universities. By God’s grace and through helpful and inspiring posts on your blog and people’s advice, I was able to make a Second Class Upper with a CGPA above 4.0. I started my NYSC service in Sokoto state and I really want to make the year an important one.
I have read about, heard and also read about testimonies of people who secure very gainful employment in their service year. I believe with the right connection and attitude, I can also have a very good testimony about the service year.
I have already decided to go for a PMP training being a Civil Engineering graduate and I also plan to visit Engineering firms in Abuja to submit copies of my CV before my one year runs out.
In short, I need your mentoring and advice, to know the latest trend and to know of what needs to be done and what not to do. I am also planning to apply for admission into a university abroad before completing NYSC so as to enable me apply for scholarships as I have discovered most scholarship schemes require an applicant to have been offered admission before applying for scholarship.
Looking forward to a response and also great mentoring from you.
Regards to you and the whole JarusHub team.

Dear Sam,
1, There is no harm in doing PMP.
2, People secure gainful employment during NYSC, but they are actually few and far between. Most firms seek NYSC dischare certificate before even inviting you for test or interview. So I will no advice you dissipate much energy on it, until towards the tail end of your service year. That doesn’t mean you should not drop you CV anywhere where opportunity comes up. But traveling all the way to Abuja, I will advise you hold on till few weeks to the end of your NYSC.
3, Try and build a decent network. Meet new people, make new friends, read about trends and developments in engineering. Read about job search. Try getting familiar with GMAT and all of that. Use your service year well.
4, Go ahead with applying for admission and scholarship abroad. This article we published sometime ago may be useful in that regard.

5, Finally, while it is good to get job during NYSC year, it is actually not a pre-requisite for post-NYSC success. Some of my friends that served in remote villages and taught in village schools ended up getting good jobs after their service year.
7, I’m open to mentoring you. Stay close to this blog and send me emails from time to time as things progress.
I wish you all the best.
