Job: I am concerned about my stammering

1

Sir Jarus,

I have been lurking around you, and I have seemed to have
taken a fancy to you. There is something that has been giving me the
heebie-jeebies whenever I think of it. I am a student of economics,
300 level, but a mild stutter. I came from a poor background and being
a mild stammer has always been what I do think of everytime. I know
being that no employer will employ a employee whose a stutter when
there are many employees who can communicate effectively without
obstruction in their speech. What advice do you have for me concerning the
foregoing matter I raised?
I will be highly grateful to have your response…
Thanks

Thank you for “e-lurking around me”, Mr. “heebies-jeebies”…lol

I feel your pain, but stammering is not the end of life. If you have the quality, your prospective employers are actually ready to ignore this natural defect. I have worked in an organization that had stammerer as an employee; not just an ordinary employee, but a management staff that was poached from a bank I wont mention and he had even earlier worked in one of the Big 4 audit firms. So it is not a disadvantage per se. Employers are also human and most of them are humane, recognizing that things like these are beyond your control. Just try now that you’re in school to go extra mile to prove yourself, like graduating with good grade, writing relevant professional exams, acquiring scarce skills, being versatile, doing well in job tests. They will make you “unrejectable” inspite of your speech defect.  It will be easier to ignore this defect when you are exceptional. I also once worked for an organization that employed “sickler”  – she was employed because she exceptional (although we later lost her).  You will agree with me that sickle cell is probably a bigger defect than stuttering. So, don’t panick. Be positive.

All the best.

Jarus

You see I have a friend who is a lawyer and yes he stammers, a lot. His job entails that he talks all the time and not just talking but making compelling speech that helps his client’s case.
You have been given great advice here, do exactly as you have been advised. Go the extra mile than the one who doesn’t stutter and know this that any problem is only as big as you make it.
Back when we were at school, My friend never quit talking even with his impediment. He mastered a certain level of control over it but his speech was never smooth. He didn’t treat it like a problem so we had no cause to identify it as one. My friend had substance, he went the extra mile to be better than us all and at the end of the day that was what made him stand out.
today he is a lawyer and he even works abroad, in the uk. Whatever you do, be inspired to be the best. The way you talk cannot stop you if you are outstanding in other areas.
