JOB DILEMMA OF A CONFUSED GRADUATE
Hi Jarus,
I hope my mail meets you well.
My name is Funmi and I just stumbled upon your blog JarusHub. It’s really impressive and I commend your efforts.
So, the thing is I’m a 20 year old female, finished from Unilag in 2014, studied Political Science and came out with 2.1 , finished NYSC this July 2015 and I engaged actively in a student organization for 2 years while I was in school. I even led the finance and administration department of the organization. I did 2 other professional courses, one from Nigerian Institute of Management and the other from International Project Management Professionals.
I have volunteered for World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa in Abuja and some social centered NGOs. Before I was actually confused on what career I wanted to pursue but I know I like management, I have been involved in organizing 2 conferences and some mini events, I raised funds professionally for the conferences so I can handle sales, and I’m good with customer service too. However, I have seriously been thinking of a career in Human Resources.
Right now I am idle and I hate being not busy. And I do not want to waste my time. I am searching for internships but I don’t want to be an intern for more than a year, a year is even a lot of time. I applied for all these exchange programs and I’m searching for local internships especially in Human Resources before I have an MBA and get a human resources certification and then finally get a full time job. I am tired of volunteering especially at this post-NYSC level.
The thing is, I don’t have any major experience in HR. I mean I have been involved in recruiting people for the student organization, leading a team, facilitating and I was taught personnel management in my professional course but nothing really serious. And I do not want to have my masters degree in Nigeria so I’m also hoping to save some money coupled with my parents budget.
I am so confused and the year is running to an end and I feel I’m wasting my life and I’m idle. Now I spend my time online, browsing for information, internships, free conferences and cheap universities abroad. I don’t know how but I believe I would be successful..
Soo what do think??

Dear Funmi,
Thanks for the kind words about JarusHub.
You appear to be a very versatile and energetic person. You have worked in so many teams, and coordinated people. You should have a decent network.
Why do you want go for internship when you’re qualified for full job as someone that has completed NYSC?
And I also don’t think you should restrict yourself to HR. I guess that’s what’s causing the inertia. Why not apply for just any entry level position – banks, professional services firms, consulting etc – and work your way to getting posted to HR position when you get there? You will hardly find any entry level job that will tell you it’s HR. They will just say, Graduate Trainee or nomenclatures like that.
Spread your tentacles. I don’t know whether you still have the contacts of the high profile people you must have met during your days working with WEF and other teams you said you have worked with. Send your CV to people you have been privileged to meet during your days organizing events.
I believe you’re still young – less than 26. This is not the time for any internship. Keep searching, keep applying for just any decent job, You don’t need to narrow your search to HR for now.
I wish you all the best.
Jarus
