HOW TO SURMOUNT THE FEARS OF FIRST INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE

1

Jarus, I must commend you for  your  very informative write-ups on interviews here. I learnt a lot but my problem is I have never been to an interview before. I’m serving and I have no working experience and I’m worried and scared to death.

I’m jittery when answering questions – a problem I haven’t been able to overcome. Is there a way I can do this and excel? Any information on how to seat, how much to smile, infact general composure?  Please I need your help. My interpersonal relationship with people is awesome, and patience is my virtue.  I perform greatly when in difficult situations and challenges bring out the best out of me…how can I incorporate all these qualities in answering questions in my upcoming interview?

Thank you sir.

Dear Favour,

Your interpersonal skills will be helpful. Everybody experiences that at one time or the other i.e freaking out, scared.

Nobody was born a perfect interviewee. I also had that fear before entering labour market.

You need to start practicing. Get your friend or brother/sister to do mock interview for you, just for fun. Hand him/her questions to ask you, sit down in front of him/her, and rehearse. Or if you can’t get anyone to practice with, rehearse yourself.

Look, even the best communicators in the world, like Larry King of CNN, mentioned rehearsing when preparing themselves. He said that in his book, “How to talk to anyone, anytime”. If you can get that book, it will be helpful.

As for how to enter, how to sit down, how to lock the door etc, I’m not so much a fan of spending so much time on those. There is no golden rule on that. Serious interviewers hardly bother on that. The HR officer that leads you in will point to where to sit, or the setting will naturally dictate that – you see the only empty seat in front of your interviewer, it is natural for you to know that is your seat.  Just quickly read the situation and take your seat. Many serious interviewers will tell you to have your seat within the first 5 seconds of entering the room. If, within 3 seconds, no one asks you to sit down, use your sense and take you seat. For me, these things are trivial. Don’t be too bothered. They’re basic, natural etiquettes that commonsense will easily decide on what to do.

Dress neatly, have a good cut, prepare well, they boost your confidence level.

JarusHub also has an interview preparation service you can enroll for.
