HOW TO QUIT BANKING JOB AND RETURN TO ENGINEERING
Wasiu holds a first degree in Mechanical Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria and Msc in Sub Sea Engineering from University of Aberdeen, Scotland, where he finished with Distinction. He has worked in oil and gas engineering services industry in Nigeria and abroad for more than 6 years.
Five years in the banking sector is quite some experience but like your mail reads; you still have a passion to practice engineering, and that I can say is a big step already towards fulfilling what your heart wants.
To make a switch back to engineering, especially to a field you can still relate to (materials or metallurgical engineering) you will need some “re-training”, and the most appropriate (in my opinion) is to go for your M.Sc. in relevant and lucrative courses like corrosion engineering, with spécialisation in cathodic protection, coating, integrity or reliability management.
While at it, you may also consider project management with bias for the above mentioned relevant areas, and it will be very good if you can also do the level 1 certification of NACE in your area of interest concurrently (you can start now by finding out more about NACE certifications). Another relevant field you can also consider is welding inspection (or engineering).
With your “residual” knowledge in material engineering I believe you can easily make this switch and even make a significant contribution in engineering management from your banking experience, five years can’t be a waste anywhere you decide to switch to.Thank you,
