HOW MARKETABLE IS SOCIOLOGY IN NIGERIA?

15

Hello Sir,

I just got admitted into a top University in the South-West of Nigeria, to study Sociology (merit). But I’m being denied registration because according to them I must have an Art subject to go with my English, Mathematics, Economics, Government, and Commerce in GCE result. They also refused two sittings. Although a lecturer told me it could be considered, that Government could substitute an Art subject but it seems there’s no hope. I feel broken and dejected, and I marvel at how Nigeria is never willing to give someone a fair shot at anything.

My question is, how MARKETABLE is Sociology in Nigeria? I’ve asked a couple of folks and they keep feeding me the same vague line: “If it’s what you want/love to do then.. What the hell! Go ahead! Follow your passion. Moreover, the course you study studied in Nigeria doesn’t matter or determine the job you’ll get”. I wonder how true this is.

I need someone who would be truthful to me and tell me the FACT. I seem to like Economics but I suck at Mathematics, and I really wouldn’t want to graduate with anything less than a First Class. So.. I need your expert and sincere counsel sir.

Many Thanks.

Dear Tope,

First, the university reserves the right to set its admission policy. I therefore can’t help on the criteria set by the school – that you must have a credit pass in at least one Art subject in your GCE result. But that is still strange to me, because Government is also an Art subject. So I advise you pursue it further, especially with the lecturer that told you Government is sufficient as an Art subject.

The opinion that course of study doesn’t matter much is actually true to a great extent.

If you suck in Mathematics, don’t go near Economics. You can’t make a First Class in Economics if you run away from Mathematics.

My advice is accept that Sociology and work to make good grade there. Many companies don’t care about course of study.  They put all of you in same bucket to slug it out for the employment space, once you make their required grade (usually 2.1 and above) and within their specified age bracket.  I have a friend that studied Sociology and is doing well in one of Nigeria’s top telecommunication companies. Check his LinkedIn profile here. Check out this gentleman too, he’s also a graduate of Sociology and doing extremely well.

That is my candid advice.

I must confess it’s not so marketable. But if you make a good grade, first class or second class upper, some companies (like banks and professional services firms) don’t care about course.

    Please sir, after studying sociology..
Can someone actual take a turn to Medical sociology; And thereafter work in a hospital or any medical parastatal as a medical consultant?
    If yes what’s the way?

I don’t think so, you need to study medicine before you can become a medical consultant.

I disagree with the comments that what you study does not determine where you work. Its just that Nigerians can be biased at times. I mean what will a sociologist be doing in an electrical enginering firm where they do pure engineering? It is ridiculous. If it happens. Then its by a slim chance, simple. Let’s not deceived ourselves. I tink some Nigerians will allow you operate on them it you bag first class in sociology and you are employed as a surgeon.
