How Can I Get Oil & Gas Job with My Third Class Degree?

How to get oil and gas with a third class mechanical engineering degree
0

Dear Jarus,

I stumbled upon your site a few weeks back and I must say, it’s a really helpful blog, please keep up the good work.

Well, I’m a graduate of mechanical engineering, UNN and I’m done with my NYSC and I’m pursuing a career along the mechanical engineering line but the issue now is I graduated from school with a 3rd class.

I know it’s really low but I still believe I can be a top engineer for one of the top companies in Nigeria (oil and gas sector) but now, I’m currently looking to secure a job in the power sector, where I’m doing like an internship (without pay).

I’m also thinking of doing a post graduate diploma to help boost my chances of securing the job in the power sector but I’m confused as to which post graduate course I should take on. Please if you have an advice for me as per my short term goal(of working in the power sector) and my long term goal(oil and gas) and life in general please please please help me.

 Thank you.

Dear Emeka,

Your short term goal of working in the power sector is in order.

It may be a little tight to move to oil and gas sector, but it is not impossible. Networking will be helpful here – meeting and connecting with top shots in the oil and gas industry.

If the aspect of the power sector you work is Genco, it may be a little easier to have interface with oil and gas companies, who supply gas to Gencos. You could use that to penetrate into oil and gas folks and probably use the relationship (plus demonstration of competence) to penetrate a gas company.

For postgraduate, any good engineering course would do. That way, as an experienced candidate with decent experience in the power sector, your grade in first degree may become secondary.

All the best.
