HEY JARUS, WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?

1

Good day Sir,

Thank you being a great mentor and help. Thanĸs a lot for the good work you’ve been doing through your blog too. I refresh your page almost 10times a day..lol. The major reason I’m opening up †o you is because you inspire me a lot & I believe you would be able †o help me in this dilemma.

I’m a 23 year old lady and I graduated in 2012 with a B.Sc Accounting (second class upper). Within the space of a year, I cleared all my ICAN papers and I’m now a qualified chartered accountant (although I’m awaiting induction).

The issue now is that; it’s almost a year since I finished my youth service and I’ve not gotten any job. Trust me, there’s no job I’ve not applied for on Jobberman, Jobgurus etc. I even sent my CV and cover letters to different companies just in case there is any vacancy in their organization. I’ve prayed, fasted, cried †o God & all but I’ve still not gotten any job.

At first, I thought the issue was with my CV so I’ve edited it like a thousand times. I’ve also learnt how to use some accounting packages very well (†o improve my employability) and I’ve added them †o my cv as well but still, no job!

At this moment, its almost like my life is at a stand-still. I’ve exhausted all my savings, no recruiter has “gotten back” †o me, I can’† even go for my masters (due †o lack of funds) and I can’† even get my ICAN membership certificate (they said I need 3 years experience)

Please sir, I really need your advice. What am I doing wrong? and what should I do?

Thαnĸs a lot. God bless you sir!

Dear Onyinye.

I understand your pains. But I don’t think there is a big problem. You made a 2:1, you cleared ICAN papers in one sitting. That shows you’re good, at least academically.

Sometimes, information makes difference. I have the feeling that if you had known helpful people  within organizations, you may not be at home by now. But by God’s grace, I will assist in pushing your impressive CV within my circle and hope it coincides with a relevant opening that you are qualified for. NB: Networking aids the prepared. I find it easier selling someone with impressive CV than one without, even if he is my brother or sister. First Class, good second class upper with relevant professional qualifications are easier to recommend than one with dry CV. You can’t force a company to bend their rule of say, minimum of 2.1

Have you also tried applying to top audit firms like PwC, KPMG, Ernst & Young, Akintola Williams Deloitte, or banks? These guys recruit from time to time and with your qualifications, subject to you meeting their age requirement (most times, less than 26), you stand a very bright chance of being invited for test.

I don’t think your CV is the problem. I also don’t think you need Masters now. You have what it takes to get you decent job already.

You’re not doing anything wrong. It’s a matter of time of time and circumstance. Except for the fact that  there may be information gap (Not all openings are advertised – today alone, 2 different friends have called me to send them CVs for urgent openings. You wont see these kinds of things advertised).

Maybe another reason is the decreasing demand for entry level applicants in Nigeria in recent time due to hard economic times, unlike when some of us finished university some 8 to 10 years ago when banks – at least – were absorbing graduates almost on weekly basis.

Nonetheless, I see you smiling very soon.

All the best.
