ECONOMICS OR POLITICAL SCIENCE?

1

Hi, I opted in for economics in Obafemi Awolowo University, but I didn’t meet the cut-off mar so I had to settle for political science.  I have been trying to change back to economics, but it has been very hard.
I have been advised to stay and finish political science. However, I am not interested in politics. What advice can you give? What can I do with political science?

Dear Tade,

You can use political science degree for most of what economics degree can fetch you, except a job that specifically requires you to have a degree in Economics. Political Science and Economics are both within the group of courses known as Social Sciences. In Nigeria today, grade trumps courses in graduate recruitment for many companies.

This is however not to say economics is not more marketable that political science, it is, as some companies don’t lump social sciences together. But again, a first class or 2.1 political science graduate is likely to get job more easily than a 3rd class or even 2.2 graduate of economics.

If you must do something that has to do with economics and cannot get offer into economics department, you may try crossing to Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) in your current department (I finished from your faculty so know much about it). I have a friend that had 2.1 in PPE and not doing badly today. But if you can’t get that too, just continue with Political Science and make sure you make at least 2.1.

I wish you the best.
