Good Day Mr Jarus,
My name is Femi am an ardent follower of you on Nairaland. I read most of your topics which is so educative and motivative, I really commend you on that sir, which is one of the reasons which prompted me to send this mail. Sir, I am really in dire need of your advice on an issue.
I am just a fresh undergraduate of Adeyemi College of Education in Ondo. I’m doing a degree course in Geography[B.sc/edu] which is affiliated to Obafemi Awolowo University.
Though my childhood ambition is to study Economics, because I had a dream of working in a multinational company, but due to some situation I ended up with Geography.
My problem is not with the course although when I was in secondary school I was better in Geography than Economics. I’m just looking at the job prospect.
Sir, apart from teaching [lecturing] is there any other ways of fulfilling my dreams? Is there any course I can still do for my M.sc that will enable me to work in any firm with Geography as a first degree? Although I’m working towards getting the best result with that course.
Sir, it will be highly appreciated if you could reply me.
Femi,
+++++
Dear Femi,
There is nothing wrong with Geography. A good number of openings say “Economics or any Social science course”, a bucket that contains Geography too.
My worry is the “affiliation to OAU” part. If you want to study Geography or any other course in OAU, pick UTME form or use direct entry. All these affiliation things, frankly, are more or less a waste of time. They are not recognized in corporate Nigeria. So I take it as you are studying at a College of Education, not OAU.
I’m also worried about your English language proficiency, as I spotted too many basic errors in the email before editing.
All these said, there is nothing wrong in teaching. If that programme is acceptable for admission for Msc in any university, please go for it after the programme, but start making enquiries now so you wont be surprised when the certificate turns out not acceptable for Masters study. I’m just not a fan of these affiliation programme. I can guarantee you that the certificate will not read OAU.
So take it as you’re studying in a COE and there is no harm in that. Lecturing job is not bad.
I wish you all the best.
