DANGOTE CEMENT OR AJAOKUTA STEEL?

Dear Jarus,
I’m an ardent reader of your blog (I’ve never missed any of your articles for a year now). I’ve been following you on Nairaland since 2008.

I graduated from a top polytechnic in 2008 and rounded off my NYSC in 2010. I studied Electrical/Electronics engineering(HND, Upper Credit)

Since I graduated, I was unable to secure any job on my field(I’ve been teaching from one school to another)

Two weeks ago, I got an offer from Ajaokuta Steel Company and I’m to resume in few weeks time. I’ve been to the company for documentation
and I met some old time friends and I wasn’t impressed with what they told me about the company. Their equipment are outdated and they’re still operating on manual coupled with their take home pay(61k/month) after deductions.

Just yesterday, I had an interview with Dangote Group at their Obajana Cement Plant. From my performance on the interview, I’m very sure that I will be called. Though, they’re recruiting for their academy. We will be trained for a year with payment of 80k/month and we will be absorbed after the training with salary of 140k/month.

My problem now is about my career. I really want to know which of these two companies will favour me, career-wise, as I’m planning to go further(PGD & Msc/M.Eng) with my studies.

Dear Wale,

I will advise you opt for the Dangote job, as Ajaokuta, like your friend told you, is not in good shape now.  However, never assume because you thought you did well in interview and consider getting the job. A bird in hand, they say, is better than two in the bush. So, don’t reject the Ajaokuta offer until you get your offer letter and resume at Dangote.

If Ajaokuta asks you to resume before you the Dangote offer is completed, please show up and start there. You can still resign even if it’s just two weeks after resuming.

A private sector job with Dangote Group should give you the needed exposure at this point.
