COMBINING O’LEVEL RESULTS : DOES IT AFFECT MY JOB SEARCH EFFORTS?

10

Hello,
I am Sukurat A, I completed my NYSC in February 2014, I used two sittings in O’level through school but I noticed that most job vacancies require one sitting, I am thinking of writing another O’level this year but I am not sure if it will be accepted.

I need your advice as a career mentor  in nigeria if I should go ahead to write a recent O’level. Your prompt response will be highly appreciated.

I came across your blog through google search, trying to get an answer to my question

Thanks

Dear Sukurat,

Yes, a good number of good jobs require minimum of 5 credits in one O’level sitting. In addition to that, even where this requirement is not expressly stated, it opens you to unsettling questions during interviews and may make a difference. But some recruiters don’t bother much, once you did well in interview.

The other option of taking the exams again now will also raise question of why now. If I were you I would have re-written it since I got admission into higher institution.

However, I have seen some people get decent jobs even with combined O’level results.

So my advice: go ahead and rewrite the exam this year. Where it is expressly stated that combined results are now allowed, present the new result; where no such requirement is stated, present the combined result. You may also be lucky that some recruiters may not check the year on the O’level certificate, some just don’t have such attention to little details, they just glance through the paper to see if you make the required grades (e.g credit in 5 subjects, credit in English & Math etc).

I don’t know what grade you made at the end of your first degree, but if you made good grade, it may be easy to overlook this. Good professional qualifications, if applicable in your field, and high performance in interviews are other things that can make it easy for recruiters to overlook this deficit.

I wish you all the best.

But i really wonder why coys would be requiring 5 O’level credits when you went on to graduate with a decent grade (say 2.1). It’s obvious it’s used to cut down further.

Please, Mr Jarus, I also merged my WAEC result and NECO result to gain admission into the University, I’m presently in third year, please can you state expressly if there can be any redeemable action to remedy it now that I’m in school. Thanks.
