Career Advice: Development Sector (International NGO) vs Public Sector (FIRS)
Question: Please I’ll need your advice on choosing between a job in the development sector (International NGO) and one in public service (FIRS).
AA
Response:
INGO/ Development Sector
Pros
– Great exposure
– Good pay
-Travel opportunities
– Usually flexible
– Networking opportunities
Cons
-Mostly fixed term contract
-You may have career breaks, period of no job (I have a friend that is currently experiencing this)
FIRS/Public Sector
Pros
– Stability
– Long term career
Cons
– Rigid structure
– Limited places you could seek job if you want to move
VERDICT: If you’re the conservative type, go for FIRS; if you can take big risk and ready for the occasional period of no job, even though you will have a good time and great exposure in the period with jobs, settle for the International NGO.
All the best.
