Advise him: To continue with Dentistry or rewrite UTME for Medicine?
Good afternoon Sir.
I am a newbie here so I dont know how to post for an advice.
I am a newly admitted student for OAU Dentistry. Sir I’m at crossroads now, I dont knw if I shoul continue with the course or sit for UTME again for Medicine. I know they are both under the same MDCN body but I am thinking of fulfillment and not money or salary.
Sir your advice will be highly appreciated.

I’m inclined to advising you that, if you really love Medicine then give UTME another shot while continuing with and being serious with your Dentistry year 1 studies (in case UTME does come good again), but let me throw this open.

I have a friend who did exactly what jarus said and it worked, he continued with botany and was giving medicine the following year. Try it out, work hard and all the best.
Ultimately, this is a call you have to make based on your dispensation towards either course of study, which ultimately lead towards a career. My brother had exactly the same dilemma 25 odd years ago, decided finally to sit with dentistry, and is quite well fulfilled in that today. Remember both of them are human care subjects. If it is any help, you hours tend to be better as a dentist
You have gotten good advises. for me, I would rather wait, write UTME again to get what I want. I also took that step of going for what I never really believed in and it took me years to get back to what I really have passion for.
More informed advice from Facebook:
Sodiq Oyedeji Alabi: I would say continue with Dentistry, consult yours seniors in the field. I don’t know what you mean by fulfilment, even if you study medicine you will still most likely have to specialize. Dentistry is a field That’s only bound to grow as more Nigerians become prosperous and we start taking our teeth more serious as obtainable in the developed world. Nigeria’s middle class is growing and dentistry will grow along. Consult your seniors.
Muhammad Shakir Balogun (Experienced Medical Doctor): Fulfillment? I know of a number of dentists/dental surgeons who’r quite accomplished. if you love it, please go for it. even if you study medicine, to make an impact you still have to specialise – and in a sense dentistry is a specialty of medicine. and you can diversify. one of the most renowned epidemiologists in the world – KJ Rothman – is a BMD. Apply urself, be focused.
Adebayo O Shefiu ( a young Medical Doctor): Well to me d fulfilment here is ‘personal’. The 1st JAMB I wrote that I chose OAU(1st & 2nd choice MB;BS) though influenced by so many factors(e.g Sec.sch seniors already in OAU-Dr Michael Taiwo,Jarus).I wasn’t given an admission bcos I didnt beat d ‘merit’ cut-off marks but my score fell into other categories like catchment,ELDS or smth sha(‘patchable’ to enter) n I wasn’t given an admission. People were like I shld b given another course which could avail me d opportunity of crossing to Medicine in 200L IF I could do VERY well in that Dept. I was of d opinion ‘Medicine or Nth’ even if wld write JAMB 100times,then ran back to my state…lolz. Even as at then,I was a dyed-in-the-wool personality and d Valor, strongwill, courage, grit n mettle made me who I am today. @Dr Balogun was gobsmacked by d word ‘fulfillment’ bcos he’s a senior colleague.experienced n ve seen alot in d profession and he’s like what’s there in Medicine?…lolz. Oga,a lot oo. Fulfillment here means happiness n satisfaction in one chosen carrier when one is wholehearted n stubbornly attached to something. #JustMyOpinion. To the guy, continue with d Dentistry, pursue ur Dreams n be prayerful
Ibrahim Abiola Abd-Latee: I was exactly in this situation few years ago when i was admitted to study Dentistry at the university of Ibadan even though i had applied to study medicine,I’m grateful to The Almighty that my cousin encouraged me to continue.Guess what?By the end of my 1st semester in the university,i’d a great interest in the profession.Worthy of note to my colleague to be that all attempt to change to medicine at the end of the session failed: i wrote another JAMB,to no avail;attempt to cross to medicine failed woefully as a professor that i was opportuned to meet tried in vain.I’m a practising dentist with no regret in any way.As per fulfillment, everyday i feel fulfilled changing peoples’ life positively, the smiles i put on my patients’ face is my joy not the money.Dear colleague, suffice to note that your training as a dentist is as tedious as that of a medical doctor if not even harder, from your 100 level to 400 level, you do essentially the same thing until the 5th and 6th year that you concentrate on dental courses fully. The choice is yours to make but i hope with this little explanation of mine, you can chart a way forward to attaining a career fulfillment.
Jarus: I think these advice above are sufficient to make your decision.
All the best
Thanks a lot sir i really appreciate.
How many years pls does it take for one with BDS degree already to obtain an MBBS degree
