Accounting is damn boring!

0

Dear JarusHub,

I need your candid advice/help on an issue that borders my mind so much. I have Bsc in accounting from UNILAG and AAT from ICAN. Currently in skill level of ICAN (having 2 papers to complete that leve FR and PM).

I am 37 years old, married with a child and currently working in account and finance department of my organization. Honestly, I am not finding accounting interesting. The ICAN exam has been a nightmare coupled with the monotonous nature of Accounting work in the office. I have sat for the ICAN stage I am currently like 4 times without success. I see myself doing better in any career that entails talking, thinking and providing solution. Not career that has to do with figure/calculation. I am more of theory person.

What can I do?  Also, I wish to further my education abroad; Canada or US with the intention to work and study and continue work after my study. With my current certificate, which course/program will you advise me to put in for? Thanking you for taking your time to read through . God bless you all for the great work you are doing. Hoping to get a reply soon.

Thanks

Joe

Dear Joe,

I agree with you that Accounting can be boring. I also found it very boring and too mechanical until much later. I think my specialization in taxation – which is more interesting in my view – saved me the boredom. That said, there are many people that find accounting interesting. Only that me and you don’t.
Just continue with your ICAN and finish it. In the short term, you may seek a move away from accounting department in your organization. I know many people that started their careers in accounting department and crossed to other departments.
Moving to Canada or US is not bad. I have many accountant friends that have moved, and settled there. You could choose to study a course like Finance for your masters, which in my view is more interesting. Your Bsc Accounting should be able to get you Msc Finance admission in Canada or US.
All the best.
