A TRIPARTITE DILEMMA: DISCO, BANK OR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES FIRM?

0

Good day Sir Jarus, trust you’re doing great.

Firstly, I want to appreciate your intelligent comments on Nairaland and Jarushub. I have learnt so much from you. I don’t know if you can recall, but I was the guy who asked you how I could scale through interview hurdles in banks as an Engineer. Your timely response helped.

I’m currently on a supposed one year training with one of the Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs). The pay is on the lower side as a trainee, and no one knows how much it’ll be after training.

As a chemical engineer, I’m really not enjoying this ‘power sector’ career path, although it has a prospect just like the telecommunications sector, I doubt if I have that patience.

I concluded my interview with one of the best 3 banks and it was successful. Medicals and Training school should be next and I don’t really know when I’ll be called.

Also, I’m still on one of the big fours (audit) recruitment, and the stages are still much as I heard resumption would be around August.

I finished with good grades and my dream is the oil and gas sector. The training from the big four is professional and I feel it’ll prepare me for a challenging role in some years to come.

Again, I’m scared of marketing role in the banking sector. Please
advice, been thinking about this.

Thank you.

Good to hear from you again.

1, Continue with the DISCO while you await final feedback on the bank job.

2, How did you know the bank wants to post you to marketing division? But whether marketing or not, I think moving to the bank (one of the 3 biggest, according to you) is not a bad idea. Major reason is, if the audit firm’s job doesn’t come true, experience in a “Big 3” bank adds
more value to your CV, and the pay will be far better than what you
currently get from the DISCO.

3, Whether you stay with the DISCO or move to bank, I think the “Big 4” professional services firm is your best bet. So if the offer comes, dump wherever you are of the two earlier for it. You’re sure of sound training in the professional services firm and can be used as a plank to your oil and gas industry dream (but not in technical role).

JARUSHUB SERVICES

Summary of what I have said: If bank comes first, take it  as a stop-gap, while waiting for the result of the professional services firm, and also as a hedge in the event of the Big 4 firm not coming through. I will rate a “top 3” bank over a DISCO for now.
