A STRUGGLING STUDENT’S PATH TO THE ATTAINMENT OF CAREER GOAL

0

Dear Jarus,

Ever since I was in secondary school I had always had a big vision of becoming an investment banker in the near future, I did excellently in my WAEC but sadly I got a D in English, which is very saddening considering how well I did in my other subjects. But God being so good, my NECO came out and I made all the papers but as we all know NECO, their grades are never so high, and I had a lot of C6s, is that still okay sir?

Now I’m in the University  currently going to 200 Level, studying Finance. I didn’t do too well in my 100 level as I was carried away by the new environment I was in, especially being so young.

In my 2nd semester I had a 3.97 G.P but it was too late as I ended up with a 3.44 CGPA in 100 Level, which is well far from my plans and ambitions of finishing with a first class. Please can you kindly advice me on how I can get back on track and make my way up the ladder to a first class. I have enrolled for ICAN and I’m currently proceeding to ATS 2 by God’s grace.

I anticipate your candid advice.

Dear Wale,

1, Not passing English Language in WAEC (O’level), is not too good for anyone that aspires to become an investment banker.

2, If you had always wanted to become an investment banker right from secondary school, why getting carried away with new environment? Are you sure this is just a momentary loss of a focus that dated back secondary school? Remember that was the second time you’re given excuse (I, WAEC English; 2, Poor result after year 1).

3, All these said, there is no harm in using NECO result. Please use it.

4, That you’re writing us is enough proof that you’re ready to get more serious, so that is still some good news.

5, To be frank, with a CGPA of 3.44/5.0 after year 1, in a four year course, where year one was the best chance to build solid CGPA, it will be tough to make a first class, but not impossible. Most first class graduates that I know had track record from secondary, even primary, school. Not people that couldn’t pass English in WAEC and managed to get Cs in NECO. Yet, I know a couple of cases of comebacks, people that didn’t do well in lower levels of education but went ahead to do well in the university and made first class. So, I’m hoping you will be one of those people.

6,  You can still make a first class. Try the tips shared in these articles.

7, The good thing is, if you try those tips and still couldn’t make a first class, getting a 2.1 is also good. Just make sure you don’t make below 2.1 to stand any chance of getting job in a decent investment institution.

8, Enrolling for ICAN, as you have already done, is also a good step in the right direction.

9, Just focus on your academics for now and remember investment banking is for the brightest graduates. I hope that will motivate you to work harder.

I wish you all the best.
