7 Questions and Answers with an Investment Banking Aspirant

Hi Jarus, thank you for all your post about investment banking in Nigeria. I’ve digested a lot of information from your site. Please I need answers to these specific questions regarding investment banking.
1. What is the minimum requirements to apply for entry level in corporate finance division (Analyst)?
2. Is Age used in shortlisting/recruiting?
3. My O’level result has a deficiency in English (E8), will that be at a disadvantage to me? Do they ask for O’level results during recruiting process?
4. What is the recruitment process like for most firms like Vetiva, Chapel Hill etc.?
5. Between ICAN and CIS, which is preferable for investment banking?
6. How do you get promoted from Analyst to Associate?
7. Can I also apply to them after completing an MBA with years of
experience in another field?

Thanks for the kind words. Please see my response below:

1, Good Bsc with 2.1 minimum, especially in Economics, Accounting and related courses. Or non-management degree (e.g Sciences, Engineering etc)  with professional exams like ICAN, CIS, CFA etc
2, Most of them use age. Usually 26 years and below
3, It may be a disadvantage. Most of them ask. Does it mean you have not written and passed English since?
4, Most of them don’t advertise. It’s through informal contacts or unsolicited application. Get your CV to them by any means – through people working there, career section on their website, walking to their office to drop CV etc. They normally store in database and invite candidates that meet their requirements when the need arises.
5, I normally advise ICAN as the professional exam to start with.
6, Performance on the job.
7, Sure. MBA is coveted.
